Kitchen Mayhem
Hello friends! It has been awhile since I’ve blogged, but not due to lack of desire… It’s all been because of some kitchen mayhem at the little by little house. I guess it is to be expected in a 100 year old home, but the timing sure could have been better.
The Kitchen Mayhem Incident
Late evening on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I turned the upstairs shower on to let the water warm up before stepping in. Shortly after, I hear my wonderful Hubby yell and ask if I had the showerhead pointing towards the wall. Years ago we had a small incident with old caulking along the edge of the tub. It was allowing some water to get through into the kitchen ceiling light that is directly below our bathtub. Of course, I did not, and of course, this was the beginning of the kitchen mayhem. One thing leads to another, and bam, we have water all over the kitchen floor, disconnected pipes that are possibly older than I am, and a huge hole in our kitchen ceiling.
The Damage
When it was all said and done, we had to have new pipes run throughout the area. Obviously we also need a pretty big ceiling repair or most likely a new ceiling all together. The truth is, we have had an unsightly hole in our plaster wall and ceiling near the doorway leading from the kitchen to our living room for some time now. This was just the push we needed to move the kitchen to the front of the list.

The Kitchen Mayhem Plan
After much thought we have decided to use this as an opportunity to do a little kitchen refresh. As you might be able to see, there are two prior layers of kitchen ceiling visible through our new large hole. To be honest there was already a pretty bad patch job where the hole is now. It was always visible around the awful florescent light that was hanging in the kitchen. I have just lived with it and this whole kitchen for the last 21 years. When the patch became soaked with water it caused the whole area to drop out.
Instead of being upset about the inconvenient timing, I am choosing to be thankful for the little push this has given us to get moving. Several years ago Hubby bought me new flooring for Christmas. Because of health problems and very limited days off from work for me, it was never put down. We have always talked about painting the cabinets as well. Since we now need a new ceiling, we decided to skip another ugly patch. We have chosen to just go with a new tongue and groove wood ceiling.
So, sometimes what you think is frustrating and a disaster can actually lead to something good. This kitchen mayhem at the little by little house might not be what I was looking for, but it is what we were given, and we intend to flip the script right into something new and exciting! Don’t worry, we will take you along for the ride…
