Kitchen Mayhem update– Ceiling Removal

Kitchen Mayhem update– ceiling removal!

Well here we are, it’s time for a new Kitchen Mayhem update– ceiling removal. After looking at everything we had going on up there around the hole in our kitchen ceiling, we decided a new game plan was needed. (If you are new to my blog you can see what I am talking about here in my original post Kitchen Mayhem.) Once we started looking at the big open space in our ceiling, we realized that there was a whole other layer beneath it. The original plaster ceiling was still there with a large open void in it in exactly the same place as our new hole. Apparently, years ago, someone else had the same pipe problem that we did! They did not patch their hole either. Their solution was to just put up a new layer of ceiling. Sounds familiar. I guess great minds do think alike.

The Plan

Our plan was to just install a new tongue and groove ceiling over top of the existing layer. (If you want to see my whole Kitchen Mood Board you can check it out here.) The whole area that fell to our kitchen floor was an existing patch that was unsightly since the day I moved in 21 years ago. Putting a new patch in it’s place would have been just as bad as the one that was there since 1999. An overhaul of the pipes and a new plank ceiling seemed like our best option. Luckily for us the former owners already had a whole system of furring strips in place beneath this ceiling we had been living with for the last 20+ years. What a perfect foundation for our new plank system!

The decision was a messy one, but I think it was the smartest choice for us. The whole current ceiling needed to come down…and so it did! After a day of demo we stood there looking at what was this old house’s original plaster ceiling and dingy yellow tinted paint. What a strange feeling it was! Like a step back in time. But despite the old cracked and chipping paint, what we were looking at was the perfect framework to attach our new tongue and groove planks. It was now time. This was going to be so much easier than we had originally expected. All we have to do now is measure, cut, and nail into this existing framework of furring strips. So there you have it, our kitchen mayhem update– ceiling removal. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as we go!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

I am a lupus warrior and a Sjogren’s sister, I have fibromyalgia, I have had decompression surgery for Arnold Chiari, and have Cervical Dystonia along with other health issues and I live by the Spoon Theory (If you don’t know what the spoon theory is don’t worry- I will share) like any other chronic illness patient. My life may move at a different pace but I get there just the same. In my own time. Little by little.
